‘Goodbye sweet home – fleeing from the wars of Albania, Kosovo and Syria’, is Michele Pero’s new photo exhibition. Promoted by the University of Pisa and by the Albanian Student Group ‘Milosao’ of the University of Pisa, it’s going to be exposed for the first time at the Gypsoteque of Ancient Art of the University of Pisa.
Albertina Mustafa, the project curator, experienced the Kosovo war firsthand. She really wanted to feature Michele’s war photographs taken in three theatres of war across two decades. Because, even though they were taken in different countries at different times, they show the same issues and war dynamics. Street shootings, city bombings, civilians fleeing, seeking refuge in shelters and later migrating to rich countries that, best case scenario, did not take a stand on the conflict or worse, took part in the military action. It does not matter whether those images were captured in Albania, Kosovo or Syria. The causes, the strategies and the results of wars are all the same.
This project compares the aftermath of the Albanian 1997 financial crisis, the Kosovo Repression and 1998-1999 war to the repression of the Arab Spring protesters in Syria by the Bashar al-Assad regime. This last one war is still ravaging the country and dramatically actual with all its complications, including the recent terrorism in Paris.
The exhibition comprises 48 prints, 12 from black and white negatives from Operation Alba in Albania of 1997; 12 from color negatives from the civil war in Kosovo of 1998; 24 from digital files form the civil war of Syria of 2012. It is showcased for the first time at the Gypsoteque of Ancient Art of the University of Pisa from November 28th 2015 through January 9th 2016.
“Goodbye sweet home – in fuga dalle guerre d’Albania, Kosovo e Siria”, è un nuovo progetto di Michele Pero. Patrocinato dall’Università di Pisa e promosso dal gruppo studentesco albanese Milosao dell’Università di Pisa, viene messo in mostra per la prima volta alla Gipsoteca di Arte Antica dell’Università di Pisa.
Albertina Mustafa, la coordinatrice del progetto, ha visto con i suoi occhi la guerra del Kosovo. Ha fortemente voluto le fotografie di Michele provenienti da tre diversi teatri di guerra perché ripropongono le stesse problematiche a distanza di vent’anni. Si spara per le strade, si bombardano le abitazioni, i civili scappano, si rifugiano nei campi profughi e poi iniziano a migrare verso i paesi ricchi che, nella migliore delle ipotesi, non si sono mossi o, peggio, hanno preso parte attiva alle distruzioni. Non importa che si tratti di Albania, Kosovo o Siria. Le motivazioni sono le stesse, le metodologie identiche, le reazioni scontate e i risultati identici.
In questo progetto sono messe a confronto le conseguenze della crisi finanziaria albanese del 1997, della repressione degli albanesi del Kosovo culminata con la guerra del 1998-1999, e della repressione della primavera araba in Siria da parte del regime di Bashar al-Assad. Quest’ultima guerra sta tutt’oggi mettendo a ferro e fuoco il paese ed è alla base del terrorismo che recentemente hanno colpito Parigi.
La mostra di 48 stampe, 12 in bianco e nero della Missione alba in Albania del 1997, 12 da negativo colore della guerra civile del Kosovo del 1998 e 24 da file digitale della guerra civile in Siria del 2012, verrà esposta alla Gipsoteca di Arte Antica dell’Università di Pisa dal 28 novembre 2015 al 9 gennaio 2016.
